Cost and planning

How much does a private cinema cost in Los Angeles?

+

Most Blend projects fall between $50,000 and $500,000, and private cinemas span that whole range.

More detail

What moves the number is the room, not just the gear: construction and isolation, acoustic treatment, seating, and how far the performance target goes. We set the performance goal first and price the room to reach it.

How much does home automation cost for a new build?

+

It depends on how many systems are tied together and how much of the house they cover. On average $100,000 to $300,000 for luxury residential, and up for hospitality or large commercial.

More detail

Lighting control, shading, climate, audio, video, networks and access can be designed as one system or added one at a time. Planned at design stage, the infrastructure costs far less than retrofitting it after the walls close.

When should a technology designer join a new build?

+

At schematic design, alongside the architect and before drawings are set.

More detail

That is when ceiling heights, wall construction, conduit, rack rooms, window treatments and power are still easy to change. Technology brought in at drywall can only be installed; technology brought in at schematic design can be designed.

Do you work with my architect, interior designer and builder?

+

Yes. That is how most of our projects run.

More detail

We produce technology drawings and specifications that sit inside the architect's set, coordinate with the interior designer on what is visible, and work with the builder on schedule and rough-in.

What is the difference between a technology designer and an AV installer?

+

An installer puts in equipment that has already been chosen. A technology design and integration practice decides what the space needs to do, designs the systems around that, documents it in the drawings, then installs, verifies and maintains it.

More detail

Blend is responsible for the result, not just the equipment.

Private cinemas and studios

Why won't Blend put a reference projector in a non-reference room?

+

Because the room decides what you see and hear, not the projector alone.

More detail

If the light control, acoustics, screen size and seating geometry are not built to a reference standard, a reference projector cannot perform as one, and that money does more for you in the room itself. We match the equipment to what the room can actually deliver.

What makes a private cinema sound right?

+

The room. Isolation keeps sound in and noise out, acoustic treatment controls reflections, and low frequencies are managed so every seat gets even bass.

More detail

Particle, our acoustics app, models how low frequencies behave in the room and optimizes subwoofer placement before anything is installed.

What does Dolby Atmos studio design involve?

+

Room geometry and speaker placement that meet Dolby's specifications, acoustic treatment and isolation, monitoring, and calibration of the finished room.

More detail

Blend is listed on Dolby's studio directory.

Can a media room become a real home theater later?

+

Sometimes, if it was planned for. Wall construction, isolation, power, conduit and speaker locations are hard to change after the fact.

More detail

If a theater is likely in the future, plan the room for it now and add the equipment later.

Which speaker brands does Blend use for cinemas?

+

We choose by room and performance goal.

More detail

For reference-level cinemas we often work with PMC and JBL Synthesis, and we specify other brands where they fit the room or budget better.

Home automation and control

Control4 vs Crestron vs Lutron: which is right for a large home?

+

They do different jobs. Lutron leads in lighting control and shading. Crestron and Control4 are whole-home control platforms that tie lighting, shading, climate, audio, video and access together.

More detail

The right choice depends on the size and complexity of the project, how custom the experience needs to be, and how the owners actually live. Blend designs and installs all three.

What is the difference between a smart home and a responsive space?

+

A smart home follows commands. A responsive space responds to the people inside it.

More detail

Lighting that follows the time of day, shades that track the sun, climate and air quality that adjust on their own, and controls simple enough that guests never need instructions.

Do motorized shades need to be planned during construction?

+

Yes, ideally. Pockets, power and fabric decisions are cleanest when they are in the drawings.

More detail

Retrofits are possible, but planned shading disappears into the architecture instead of sitting on it.

Why does a luxury home need structured cabling and a designed network?

+

Every system in the house depends on it: control, cameras, audio, video, access and Wi-Fi.

More detail

Designed infrastructure, with documented pathways, rack space and power, is what keeps the house reliable for years and easy to service.

Experience and wellness

What is UX for Spaces?

+

UX for Spaces is Blend's design method for buildings.

More detail

It starts with what people need to do and feel in a space, and that intent guides the acoustics, light, controls and technology so every layer supports the same experience.

What is calm technology in a home?

+

Technology that does its job without demanding attention.

More detail

Blend is a Strategic Partner and Recognized Design Partner of the Calm Tech Institute, and designs spaces where systems stay in the background until they are needed.

How does technology support a wellness space?

+

Through light, quiet, clean air and controls that never get in the way.

More detail

Light that supports sleep and focus, quiet that comes from isolation and acoustic design, clean air that is measured and managed, and controls that stay out of the way.
